Today I am really pleased to be chatting with the talented Kerry Ann Duffy, I had the pleasure of working with Kerry on our Escape to Oz shoot last year & oh my what an incredible shoot it was to be part of as you can see from the photos. Over to the lovely Kerry to tell us a little more about what goes on in her world of photography….
- What did you do before you established Kerry Ann Duffy Photography & how did you get into photography?
I worked for Nationwide Building Society for many years and never dreamed that photography would ever be a full time job for me.
I started by taking photos of my own children and from there was asked by friends to photograph their children. I then photographed a friends wedding and enjoyed it so much that I decided it was something I would like to persue. I was lucky enough to get lots of business very quickly just by word of mouth and my business grew from there.
- Could you tell us more about the type of photography services that you offer?
I am primarily a Wedding photographer but I also offer family shoots too.
- How would you describe your photographic style?
I really love fashion and magazines and this is what inspires me most. I like my photos to be elegant and romantic but also have an editorial edge. For me, it is very important for a couple to feel comfortable in front of the camera, because then I can capture natural moments and emotions as they unfold. This is easier said than done as none of us really like a camera pointed at us, however, with direction and my ability to put people as ease, I feel I am able to create natural but captivating images.
- What do you love most about what you do?
I love the fact that I get to capture special moments in peoples lives, be it a wedding or a family shoot. I am recording memories for people in beautiful images which they can cherish forever and I think that’s a wonderful thing to do.
- How do you deal with & adapt to tricky situations when photographing a wedding, such as bad weather for example?
It’s important to make sure you know the venue you are shooting at well. You can then make quick decisions about where to go if the weather does change. This also goes for lighting etc. Not all venues are the same and some can be quite dark too, so I think the main thing is to ensure you are prepared for all eventualities. I will always make sure I have either visited the venue before hand, or that I have arrived in plenty of time to have a good look around.
- What would be your advice to couples who are in the process of looking for their wedding photographer, any important factors they should take into consideration?
Do lots of research! Many photographers give you lots of ways in which to view their work and find out about them, so take advantage of that. If you find someone who you like (or have created a shortlist) take a look at their Facebook pages, blogs and instagram. I have lots of clients who come to meet me prior to booking but just as many book just after a phone call, skype or even just chatting over email too.
Don’t be afraid to ask questions. So many people say to me, “I am so sorry to keep asking questions” or ‘this may be a silly question” There are never any silly questions and there aren’t too many. I completely understand that you don’t get married every day and that you want everything to be just perfect. I am photographing weddings all the time so I always tell my clients to use me for any advice they need. If you are chatting with someone who isn’t open and honest then that would be a concern.
Don’t scrimp on your photography. It can be tempting if a friend or family member says that they will photograph the wedding for you, especially if you are on a budget. But your photos are going to be all that you are left with after one of the biggest days of your life and you want to be guaranteed that they will be as beautiful as your day was.
Finally, choosing your photographer is such a big deal and one of the most important choices you have to make for your wedding. Out of all of the suppliers you choose, your photographer is the one you will spend most time with on your wedding day. Ensure that you like them and feel comfortable with them. Do you think that they will fit into your day? Do they put you at ease? Ask them about their approach to photographing a wedding and think about whether it will suit you and your day.
- What future plans do you have for Kerry Ann Duffy Photography for the rest of 2014 & beyond?
Now that 2014 is coming to an end I am beginning to think about next year and even 2016 as I getting bookings so far in advance.
My plan is to continue to capture each couples wedding as beautifully as I possibly can. I have been nominated in the Perfect Wedding Awards under best photographer category, so I’m looking forward to the ceremony in a few weeks.
